Stevenson’s Boys Varsity Basketball team beat Zion-Benton Township High School on Thursday, Jan. 15 in a home game, with a final score of 79-40. Stevenson stayed ahead the whole time, contrasting their prior two losses.
Stevenson took an early lead, scoring consistently from all over the court. Stevenson’s Donovan Williams ’26 opened up the game with a clean three point shot, which Zion’s Clyde Johnson ’28 responded to with his own two point swish from the paint*. Stevenson’s Aidan Albrecht ’26 took a quick rebound and scored another shot, setting up a 3 point lead for Stevenson that they continued to grow.
Following their strong start, Stevenson blocked two shots from Zion’s team, and a member from the opposing team fouled Rocco Pagliocca ’26, who made both free throws. Williams and Pagliocca quickly followed up with some additional baskets, including a layup and a shot from near the free throw line, placing Stevenson far ahead of Zion, being 29-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Kavin Patel ’27 scored two three pointers, and brought great defense through deflections and a steal against Zion. Stevenson kept ahead of Zion and with multiple assists given to Pagliocca, the Patriots were able to end the first half 56-23.
The beginning of the third quarter started off rocky with both teams turning the ball over, leading to Zion’s chance to catch up at the free throw line. Scoring some but missing others, they were catching up to Stevenson’s score.
However, Patel, along with Kavin Krishnarajah ’27 scoring three three pointers, the attempts to close Stevenson’s lead was shut down. The third quarter ended at a dominating 72-34.
In the fourth quarter, Zion went all-out and brought their offensive game up, taking four rebounds and scoring layups. However Tyler Nack ’27, who was brought out in the third quarter, responded with fades, ending the game 79-40.
