Stevenson defeats Libertyville 64-50

The boys’ basketball team beat Libertyville 64-50 on Thursday, with Justin Smith ’17 tallying 28 points and Willie Herenton ’17 adding on 16 points of his own.

In the fourth quarter, Smith threw down two monster dunks that brought everybody up to their feet. During the second dunk the defender just stepped out of the way and let Smith go up for the jam. Smith could have gotten more dunks on fast breaks, but Libertyville fouled Stevenson before Smith could take advantage of the opportunity. After Smith’s first dunk, the whole Libertyville student section stood up and left, as the Patriots had a double-digit lead at the time.

Stevenson was only up two at the end of the first quarter, but in the second quarter they stepped up on their way to a fourteen point halftime advantage. The Patriot defense was impeccable all game, getting numerous steals and shutting down star Libertyville player Drew Peterson in the second half, holding him to seven points during that time. Peterson ended up with 23 points for the game, but Stevenson could not stop him until they put Eric Zalewski ’17 on him in the second quarter.

The Stevenson offense moved the ball well in Thursday’s game, getting multiple Libertyville players in foul trouble with their driving ability.
